    Birchfield Bake Off

    Pupils from all across the school joined this week in baking muffins, using a basic muffin recipe, plus their own creative adornments for the first Birchfield Bake Off. What a dazzling array of creations we had, giving the judges a hugely difficult task! Finalists were chosen and they baked their muffins again live in our Food Technology room. Results following!

    Young Leaders Awards for 13 Pupils

    We were delighted to be able to award 13 pupils in Years 7 and 8 their Young Leaders Awards this week. The pupils have worked extremely hard to complete all their modules, developing and demonstrating key leadership and coaching skills by working with our Year 2 pupils in this term’s PE lessons. Many congratulations to them on a fine achievement.

    House Netball and Rugby Finals

    Congratulations to Brelades on becoming 2020 House Netball champions after a tough competition for the girls this week. There was some real skill on show on the pitches, and most importantly, great teamwork between pupils from different year groups. Watson become 2020 House Rugby champions after some hotly contested matches with real drive and ambition on show. Well done to them, and to all pupils for demonstrating so ably why Birchfield has such a fine reputation for sport.

    Success at the Repton Challenge

    Well done to our super team of business entrepreneurs who attended the annual Repton Challenge day, where their challenge was to design a brand new chocolate bar and market it successfully, creating costings plans, flavour combinations and an ad campaign which was presented to a panel of judges. Our team designed and pitched the ‘X-plode’ bar to great acclaim and a well deserved 2nd place in the competition. Thank you to Repton School for such a great day.  13 March 2020

    World Book Day 2020

    World Book Day 2020 gave staff and pupils the chance to celebrate their favourite books and literary characters, with pupils dressing as everything from Toad in Wind in The Willows to Mr Stink, to Harry Potter and Hermione. The whole school undertook literary themed activities all day and we were delighted see such a high level of interest and engagement amongst our pupils from the beginning to the end of the day.  10 March 2020

         

    Young Mathematician Success

    This week we sent two pairs of Year 5 mathematicians to the annual Wrekin Maths Challenge, an mathematics event attended by Prep schools from around the country and with 80 teams competing. Congratulations to Ellen and Fleur for their impressive 6th placing and to Paddy and Austin for a creditable top half placing in what was a very challenging competition.  04 March 2020

    Years 7 & 8 Host 11-13 Information Afternoon

    On Thursday, Years 7 & 8 hosted a busy parents’ information afternoon to showcase the top two years of Prep school and talk about their own experiences as senior pupils, their varied curriculum, opportunities and many achievements. Our Year 8 pupils were able to explain the scholarships and award process to interested parents and with a host of awards won for this year, they could speak from real experience. Well done to all our senior pupils on being such superb role models.

    Year 5 Fairtrade Charity Raffle

    This week Year 5 has been learning about sustainability in Geography and the Fairtrade global organisation. Their focus has been chocolate and the growers of cocoa beans across the world. For the 25th anniversary of Fairtrade Year 5 are raffling a Fairtrade hamper, kindly donated by Albrighton Co-Op. All proceeds will go to Fairtrade Fortnight.     Primary Mathematics Challenge Success

    We are very proud of Maxi, Year 6, whose performance in the recent Primary Mathematics Challenge was outstanding, and won him a place in the National ‘Bonus Round’. This is a very tough challenge for any young mathematician and we are rooting for him in this next stage. Well done Maxi!

    Science Themed Friday is a Hit

    Today the whole school was involved in a special Science Themed Friday and every lesson was linked to science and its practical application in our world. In sport, pupils undertook speed trials, measuring their running speed in km per hour and comparing their speed to that of animals. Our geographers measured wind speed at different locations. Meanwhile, our forensic team had to work out who was the criminal through forensic testing in the lab. Our seniors built a water rocket and studied the effects of pressure as they pumped air through the liquid to launch.

    School Cross-Country Event

    Today we hosted our annual Pre-Prep Cross-Country event alongside our Prep School House Cross-Country. This is a hugely popular event with parents and tests our pupils’ resilience and determination with a challenging course for each year group. There were some remarkable performances, and not all from our winners. The famous Birchfield spirit was demonstrated in spades. Well done to Brown House who were the overall House Cross-Country winners. 7 February 2020

    ISA Cross-Country Success

    A super squad of Birchfield runners travelled to Bedstone College this week to compete in the ISA Cross-Country event. With 80-100 runners in each category, competition was plentiful and strong. The weather held for a bright day, even though conditions were challenging with a muddy, hilly course. Our pupils acquitted themselves brilliantly, performing strongly in all classes and gaining two Top 20 placings. Well done to all the squad.

    93% of LAMDA Entrants gain Distinctions

    This week we have celebrated 29 super pupils who have received their grades from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art after their exams. With a record 27 Distinctions and 2 Merits, it was a stunning result for Birchfield. LAMDA remains a popular choice for many of our pupils and helps develop early confidence in performing, conversing and interacting with others.

    Rugby and Netball Coaching with Malvern College

    This week we warmly welcomed Rugby and Netball coaches form Malvern College to Birchfield to work with our Year 6 boys and U9 girls respectively. A superb afternoon of coaching was had by all with the coaches commenting on our pupils’ excellent listening skills, manners and effort levels. The teams are looking forward to applying their new skills at their next fixtures. 31 January 2020

               

    Sports Scholarship for Jack, Year 6

    Jack has been offered a Sports Scholarship to senior school. In a highly competitive field at Wrekin College, Jack stood out for his sporting talent, Shropshire County Cricket record and passion for golf and cricket. Well done to Jack, a wonderful achievement! 26 January 2020

    Cross Country Win for Nathan, Year 3

    We were thrilled to have a such a large and strong squad of cross country runners competing on Tuesday at Bedstone College for the Three Counties Cross Country Championships. All our runners ran with courage and determination, producing some fine finishes in appalling weather conditions. Nathan put in a particularly fine performance in his age group and came over the line in first place from a strong class of almost 40 runners. Many congratulations to him!

    Trip to the Wolves

    Year 5 pupils had an exciting Saturday afternoon at the Molineux where they attended a Premier League match against Newcastle United. Even though the score was not quite what our team of supporters were looking for (a 1-1 draw), there was much excitement and singing. This was a great stadium experience for our Year 5’s and one they won’t forget in a hurry!   17 January 2020

    Year 8 Scholarship Success

    Great news this week of three of our super Year 8 pupils receiving prestigious Entrance Awards from Wrekin College, Wellington. Competition for Entrance Awards to senior schools is stronger than it has ever been and Birchfield pupils continue to impress with their talents, social skills and confidence.     Birchfield raises £4,000 for Nine Charities

    Nine worthy charities have benefited from £4,000 raised by Birchfield School for a solo bike ride from Buckingham Palace to Birchfield undertaken by the Chair of the Friends of Birchfield Alex Heath. Her mammoth cycle was completed in fine style with pupils completing the final mile alongside her on their own bikes. A wonderful achievement and one of which we are very proud. 13 December 2019

    O.S.C.A.S Awards

    It was a pleasure to recognise and reward a number of pupils for their effort and outstanding commitment on the sports field this term. A huge well done to Emelyn, Jocelyn, Phoebe, Ellen and Jemima for hockey and to Gabriel, Jack, Amar, Paddy and Will for football.     Football and Hockey Colours

    Congratulations to Jenson for winning his football colours this season, and to Catherine, Alexia and Darcey for winning their hockey colours. This end of term award recognises individual pupils’ outstanding contribution to our main sports of the term.     House Football Finals

    In the Junior competition, our teams played with real grit and determination. Some impressive skills were on show as the boys fought hard to gain the edge. Brown took first place with two well-executed wins, followed by Brelades and Watson respectively. Well done to all our Juniors! In the senior competition we saw end to end action with some exciting matches and high score lines. Well done to Watson, who triumphed, and to Brown and Brelades following in 2nd and 3rd places. Many congratulations to Brown, who retain the overall House Football trophy for 2019. 10 December 2019

    Junior House Hockey Finals

    In bitingly cold weather, our Years 3 and 4 girls showed fantastic teamwork and determination, battling hard for their House and putting on a great show for the parents. The standard was admirably high with Brelades winning the title and much to look forward to for next year’s hockey season. Well done to all our girls!

    Pre-Prep Christmas Performance

    It’s been a week with a little extra Christmas sparkle at Birchfield as our Pre-Prep stars of the stage have rehearsed and performed to two sell-out audiences. Parents and family members were dazzled by both performances of ‘Children of the World’ which was a lively and colourful  spectacular with singing, dancing and well delivered comedy lines. Well done to all our budding thespians!

    Operation Christmas Child

    This week we were proud and delighted to send off a huge quantity of wrapped and filled Christmas boxes to Operation Christmas Child who will transport the boxes to needy children across the world to give them a bright smile at Christmas. A bit of teamwork in counting and loading our Birchfield boxes, and they were on their way! The joy of giving is a wonderful lesson for our pupils and these were sent with love and Christmas wishes to the many who are less fortunate than ourselves. 22 November 2019

    Book Fair

    Thank you to all the parents and pupils for supporting this year’s Book Fair.  The books ‘flew’ off the shelves and as a result we are delighted to report that it was a huge success.  Pre-Prep pupils had the added bonus of a guest appearance from Clifford the Red Dog who promotes our Book Fair. 18 October 2019 

    Head for the Day!

    Due to the success of last year’s ‘Head for the Day’ event the Friends of Birchfield held another auction at the Birchfield Summer Ball and the lucky recipient was pupil, Kieran.  Suitably attired in a dark suit, Kieran arrived early at school and welcomed parents and pupils from 8.15am at the school gate. Soon afterwards he helped Mrs Morris, with the whole school morning assembly.  The rest of the day was taken up with meetings with the Deputy Head, Head Boy and Head Girl and Mr Mason, a very welcome special football match with his classmates, before ending the day with an interview from Year 2.  It was certainly an action-packed day for Kieran! 18 October 2019

    Year 8 Visit to Carding Mill Valley

    On Monday Year 8 carried out a field investigation at Carding Mill Valley.  In preparation for their study the pupils have been studying river processes in class.  Despite the inclement weather they managed to collect data which they analysed in class later in the week. 11 October 2019

     

    Years 1 and 2 Visit to Think Tank

    On Thursday, Years 1 and 2 went to The Think Tank in Birmingham as part of their topic ‘Marvellous Me’.  Throughout the visit the children had lots of opportunities to further their understanding of how their body works and what different skeletons look like.  11 October 2019

    World Animal Day

    Last week the Year 6 Assembly centred on World Animal Day, a day celebrated on 4th October every year that gives us a chance to appreciate the wonderful animals that we share our planet with.  The assembly focussed on the sheer quantity of different creatures that live on Earth, with some scientists estimating there to be around 20 quintillion animals on the planet!
    A fundraising jar was set up to raise money to sponsor an endangered species; the school voted for the class to sponsor the rhino for the upcoming year. 7 October 2019

    Future Schools Presentation

    Last Wednesday we held our Future Schools Presentation to enable parents to decide which senior school to send their child to and, at what age, 11+ or 13+.  Parents were given the key information as to how to apply for 11+ exams as well as the value added of staying at Birchfield until 13.  Martin Cropper, Head of Admissions at Shrewsbury School, gave an insightful presentation of  11+ as well as the benefits of the traditional prep child arriving at a Senior School at 13+. 7 October 2019

    Macmillan Coffee Afternoon

    The Macmillan Coffee Afternoon was a great success and raised a fantastic £238.82.  Thank you to everyone who came and donated so generously and congratulations to our Years 7 and 8 pupils for organising the event.  We are already thinking ahead to next year’s event and it would be wonderful to see even more of you joining us to make it even bigger and better. 7 October 2019

    European Day of Languages

    On Thursday Birchfield marked the European Day of Languages by transforming the Hall into a French cafe.  The pupils ordered and enjoyed an array of French cuisine including chocolat chaud, jus d’orange, croissants and pains au chocolat.  ‘C’etait magnifique!’ 26 September 2019

    ABRSM Music Results

    Congratulations to Amelia who achieved a pass in her Grade 3 Singing Examination and to George and Nathan who both  achieved merits in their Grade 1 Piano Examinations.  Well done! 13 September 2019

    Reception 2019

    French Trip

    At the end of June a group of excited pupils made their way to France in soaring temperatures.  One of the highlights of the visit was the trip to Mont Saint-Michel.  The pupils walked to the medieval monastery and enjoyed exploring the cafes and boutiques.  Other memorable trips included going to a French market, travelling on the velo-rail and visiting Falaise Castle. 30 June 2019

    Move-up Morning for New Reception Pupils

    We welcomed the 18 new children who will be starting Reception this September.  During the morning they explored their classroom and created wonderful artwork which they took away with them. 5 July 2019

    House Swimming Gala

    On Wednesday afternoon in glorious weather the pupils took part in the much awaited House Swimming Gala.  There were many hard-fought races and some agonisingly close finishes!  A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon in which all the children swam exceptionally well.  5 July 2019

    Year 8 Leavers' Experience

    Last week Year 8 spent a week camping at Beaudesert Park in Cannock Park as part of their Leavers’ Experience.  On arrival they participated in a challenge course which comprised of going through tyres, a spider’s web, into a tunnel and then a sponge pit, holding hands throughout!  During the rest of the week they took part in activities which included climbing, axe throwing, air rifle shooting at Frisbee golf and pedal karting.  One of the most popular activities was the Via Ferrata; traversing a quarry rock face!  This was a fabulous week where all the pupils learnt new skills.  28 June 2019

    Pre-Prep Sports Day

    Last Friday Pre-Prep and Prepcare took part in their own Sports Day on a glorious day.  The children competed in sprints, obstacle courses, hurdles, relays and the challenging 300m.  Year 2 also had the opportunity to take part in shot put and long jump events.  A wonderful and memorable occasion for the pupils and parents alike. 28 June 2019

    U11 Girls win U11 ISA Rounders Tournament

    Last Thursday the U11 Girls achieved an outstanding victory in the U11 ISA Rounders Tournament at Stafford Prep School.  They won all their matches against Arnold Lodge, Malvern St James, The Old Vicarage and Crackley Hall and were crowned overall winners.  Well done girls! 24 June 2019

    Leavers' Experience

    Year 8 had a busy and varied week of activities during the first week of their Leavers’ Experience.  At the start of the week they had an informative presentation on the history of the Police Force by Chief Detective Inspector Clews.  In terrible weather conditions they braved the Wild Zoological Park at Halfpenny Green in Bobbington on Tuesday and on Wednesday they tested their teamwork skills in the classroom.  Visits to RAF Cosford, the Steelhouse Lane Lock-Up and Chillington Hall took place later in the week.  They are looking forward to their Leavers’ Camp next week at Beaudesert Outdoor Activity Centre in Cannock Wood. 17 June 2019

    Year 5 Geography Trip to Carding Mill Valley

    Year 5 spent the last day of the half-term navigating their way through and around the Shropshire Hills, practising their orienteering skills.  Thankfully, all the pupils proved to be competent using the various maps to navigate around the valley and no-one was lost! 9 June 2019

    Year 7 Trip to Warwick Castle

    Year 7 enjoyed an extensive tour of Warwick Castle, walking around the grounds and up the towers.  The highlight of the visit was the falconry show where they saw birds with 10 feet wing spans flying over their heads! 22 May 2019

    Year 2 Visit to the Mad Museum

    Year 2 enjoyed a captivating visit to the MAD Museum, Stratford upon Avon where they were able to explore, create, pull, twist, clatter, clang, build, invent, apply and see the magnificent array of mechanics on display.  The visit finished with a picnic next to the canal in glorious sunshine. 20 May 2019

     

    Reception Visit to Severn Valley Railway

    Last week Reception pupils were able to link their topics of transport and fairy tales in a most enjoyable school visit.  They boarded the steam train at Bridgnorth , disembarked at Arley Station and, then walked to Arley Arboretum.   In spite of the wet weather the pupils were still able to enter the world of fairies and folklore; they discovered lots of tell-tale signs including magical doors within trees!     LAMDA Success

    We are delighted to announce some wonderful results in the recent LAMDA Examinations with 65% of our pupils achieving the highest accolade of a distinction and the remainder with merits.  We are hugely proud of our young dramatists at Birchfield and would like to say a big well done to our pupils. Friday, 3 May.

    Year 2 Art

    Year 2 has been working on a space-themed large scale montage throughout the Spring Term.  The finished article is a wonderful success, showcasing texture, colour and perspective.  Well done to our budding artists in Year 2. Friday, 3 May.

    Austrian Ski Trip

    There was much anticipation and excitement among our pupils as they headed off to the Austrian Alps during their Easter holidays.  We were lucky enough to experience snow on four of the six days and all our skiers showed resilience and determination, improving their skiing enormously.  Great fun was had off the slopes undertaking snowball fights, sledding and llama trekking!     Year 4 History Trip to Chester

    On Monday Year 4 travelled along the ancient Roman road travelled by their forefathers, to the city of Dewa. Upon arrival they were taken to the Roman gardens where they learnt about a variety of battle tactics. Following a very entertaining gladiator battle in Britain’s largest amphitheatre, pupils examined archaeological excavations on the site of the museum. They also learnt about the life of an average soldier and how they spent their time when not preparing for battle. An educational and fun experience to remember! 29 March 2019

    Pupils' Pop-Up Shop Success

    Every member of Enterprise Club gave up their breaks and lunchtimes this week to staff the annual Pop-Up Mother’s Day shop. Many weeks of hard work and planning ensured that everyone had a wonderful time and the pupils smashed their target of £350, taking a final £402! Next week our budding entrepreneurs will conduct a board meeting to discuss how to spend their profit, all of which is donated directly back to School through the Friends of Birchfield. 29 March 2019

    Runners-up at ISA Stafford Rugby Festival

    Many congratulations to our super U9 rugby squad who did themselves and Birchfield proud to win runners-up medals in a fiercely-contested competition involving thirteen schools. Playing eight challenging matches, the team were unbeaten all day, succumbing only in their last match and narrowly missing out on the title. They played with skill, heart and pride against squads from much larger schools, securing many impressive victories and laying the foundation for further success in the future.     Birchfield runners selected for the National ISA Cross-Country Championship

    Three impressive Birchfield cross-country runners have been selected by the Independent Schools Association to represent the Midlands region in the ISA National Cross-Country Championship. This is a prestigious event and it is down to the talent and determination of our resilient runners Alexia, Charlie and Ellen that their potential has been recognised. Birchfield is justifiably proud of our three young runners and we wish them every success on 30th March as they compete for their region at Rugby School. 22 March 2019

    Nick Arnold, author of Horrible Science, visits Birchfield

    Staff and pupils were delighted to welcome author Nick Arnold, author of the well-known Horrible Science books to Birchfield this week. Nick not only spoke to our pupils but engaged them in a series of fun and interactive experiments to demonstrate such laws as centrifugal force, air pressure and the principles of flight.
    Pupils were fascinated as volunteers, including staff, were drafted in to live experiments with incredible results. Science continues to thrive at Birchfield and provides answers to some of the great mysteries of life that are in the minds of our young learners. 22 March 2019

    Ranvir selected for Shropshire County U11 Squad

    Well done and many congratulations to Ranvir, whose exemplary performance in the County Cricket trials has earned him a place on the squad for this season. His exceptional performance over the Winter training season ensured he caught the eye of the Shropshire coaches and he thoroughly deserves his place. 15 March 2019

    Sports Scholarship to Ellesmere College for Ethan

    It was wonderful to hear from Ellesmere College this week that Ethan, Year 8, has been awarded a Sports Scholarship after his outstanding performance recently at the school. This is a great achievement for Ethan and recognition of his terrific contribution to sport at Birchfield. Exciting times ahead for this young man. 15 March 2019

    C.B.Fry Exhibition for Catharine at Repton School

    We were delighted to hear from Repton School that Catharine, Year 7, has been awarded a prestigious C.B.Fry Exhibition for her performance over 24 hours at the school in a series of interviews, activities and tests. The C.B.Fry award is an All-Rounder award encompassing English, Mathematics, Teamwork, Leadership, Art, Music, Drama and Sport. The award is named after the famous Repton Old Boy who was an academic scholar and writer, diplomat and politician as well as an England cricketer and athlete. Well done to Catharine on her superb achievement. 15 March 2019

    Mindfulness Day

    Our recent Mindfulness Day at Birchfield was a time to stop and reflect upon the beauty around us, to enjoy positive well-being and to find different ways to manage the challenges of daily life.  Pupils took part in a Tai Chi session in the Hall, learning a range of breathing exercises and the skill of channeling positive energy.  Pupils from Years 3 to 7 participated in a range of different workshops during the day practising meditation and positive thinking along the way with yoga, agility challenges and visualisation techniques.  The pupils had a thoroughly enjoyable day. 15 February 2019

    Pupils were delighted recently to welcome coaches from Malvern College to Birchfield to run sessions in both rugby and netball. Children in Years 5 to 8 thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to develop their skills and benefited from further expert coaching.  This was a great start to the Spring Term. 11 January 2019

    Rachael Heyhoe Flint Cricket Award

    Many congratulations to Grace, from all of us at Birchfield, as the inaugural recipient of the prestigious Rachael Heyhoe Flint Cricket Award, set up in memory of the pioneering cricket star, who died in January last year.  Grace was selected from dozens of talented young cricketers who attended highly competitive trials at Malvern College.  This is the first dedicated girls’ cricket scholarship offered by any school and will be made annually.
    According to one of the selectors, ‘Grace really stood out . . . She has beautiful timing and is calm under pressure.  She has a fierce desire to learn and improve, which often makes the difference between a good player and a great one.’ Grace currently plays cricket at Worfield Cricket Club and plays alongside the boys in Birchfield’s 1stXI.
    Lady Heyhoe Flint captained the successful England women’s side from 1966 to 1978 and was the first female cricketer to hit a six in a Test match.  Grace hopes that “it will give me the chance to try to fulfil my dream of playing cricket for England.”

    First Sports Scholarships for Birchfield Girls

    It is smiles all round for two of Birchfield School’s girls who have both gained prestigious Sports Scholarships to Shrewsbury School. Head Girl, Esther, plays cricket for two local clubs and also for the U13s Shropshire County Cricket team.  Prefect, Grace, also plays cricket locally and for the U13s Shropshire County. This is a magnificent achievement for both girls, who play for our 1st XI cricket team, and it demonstrates the high level of sport that our girls play at Birchfield. 28 October 2019
