Prep - Years 3, 4 and 5
THE FUTURE OF THE WORLD IS IN THE CLASSROOM TODAY
Welcome to Prep School
The younger years at Prep School comprise three year groups: Year 3 (ages 7-8), Year 4 (ages 8-9) and Year 5 (ages 9-10).
Year 3 heralds the start of Prep School and things start to look and feel a little different to the children in terms of structure and expectations. Our aim is to support them to get up and running as quickly as possible with new school routines, timetables and teacher expectations.
In Prep School your child works with a large and passionate team of teachers who specialise in their subject. This means your child is taught by a specialist in Maths, English, Science, French, History, Geography, RS, Art, Sport, ICT and Food Technology. Working with a specialist teacher is central to our belief that a qualified, passionate advocate of each subject is the best way to positively enhance children’s learning.
In Year 4 Birchfield pupils start to practise being much more independent, with less time being spent in the Form Room base, for they are required to travel to classrooms in many different locations in order to be taught by subject specialists. This also teaches the children to be better organised in packing books and stationery and in managing time too as they journey to their various destinations.
As pupils move into Year 5 they follow a subject-based, broad curriculum, with an increasing focus on preparation for the 11+ and Common Entrance Exams which begin in earnest in Year 6. As members of a Year 5 form group, pupils forge a close bond with their Form Tutor and develop an awareness of their place in the wider community in an environment that is nurturing and supportive of the interests of every child.
